There are so many years dating to many occasions in the 900 years since Peterborough Cathedral foundations were laid. This illustration is of the Holy Spirit Chapel in Peterborough where there are many years on memorial plaques to many who lost their lives in wars.

W is for West Front WOW #AtoZchallenge

W’s linked to Peterborough Cathedral: West front; working; Wealth; Water; Wake; Worship; WOW; Weddings and Windows.

The west front has the WOW factor. It gets me every time, whether it’s alone in the early morning or late evening or there’s hustle and bustle around and in front of it like this day during the heritage festival,  (the festival is 16-17 June this year). Peterborough Cathedral is a very busy place, with worship, work and WOW factor it has a draw that can’t always be described.

We can now say it’s 900 years since this building was started (it took 120 years to complete), I hope those around when it celebrates 900 years since the west front was consecrated enjoy being in it’s presence as much as I do now.

We’re getting to the end of my AtoZ of all things Peterborough Cathedral and I hope you’ve got a hint of the place. It’s not always thought of and yet, it’s got it’s place in history.

V is for Vaulting #AtoZChallenge

V’s linked to Peterborough Cathedral: Vikings; VIII; Volunteers; Vaulting; Vaults; Vestry; Vestments and visions.

When I say vaulting I mean Fan Vaulting. The new building in Peterborough cathedral is a very fine example of English Fan Vaulting and is a beautiful place to be. Although people went by as I drew this the angle meant I didn’t include them, I’ve delayed this post a day because I had planned to finish the illustration with my usual permanent marker. When I looked at the drawing again I felt the pencil lines were enough and it would be too harsh with strong black lines so here it is, I hope you like it. Obviously it doesn’t do the original structure justice by any means but hopefully you can get a hint of what it might be like and come visit one day.

And when I say ‘new building’ I mean it was the latest large structure to be built and we still call it the new building. Built around 1494-1509ish is not that old after-all when you consider there’s been buildings on this site since at least the 600’s.

Bench View No188

Lots of unusual things happen around the cathedral and sometimes my illustrations show a usual day in an unusual way which is what I’ve chosen to show you here. We’ve had some very hot days during this blog which are unusual and this reminded me of this illustration from a hot day a few years ago. It shows outside the cathedral in the cloisters one lunch time when many people were enjoying the beauty and quiet of cloisters.

R’s linked to Peterborough Cathedral: Rebus; Rosetti; Relics; Robert Scarlett; Romans; Romanesque; rood screen and rules (Benedictine).

006

There are many arches in Peterborough cathedral and the roundness of them is what distinguishes them as Norman or Romanesque as opposed to Gothic which are more pointed at the centre top. I’m not an architect but have enjoyed learning more about building design and love including the arches into my illustrations.

As I say, I illustrate what passes me by. On this occasion, when there was an event in the Nave, I had pencil in hand as one of the Canons decided to get a better view to take some pictures for his twitter account. He realised when he came round to see how I was getting on with my illustrations that he’d chosen the perfect time to do it as it meant he’s in my illustration too. A different use than the pulpit usually gets.
